Dear TACCI Members & Supporters:

TACCI had a busy month in November, planning the events and the program for the year 2012. As the holidays are approaching, we are working on the year-end letters and the holiday cards for our members, thanks to whom we are getting stronger and better at what we do.

This coming year is special for another reason: TACCI will celebrate its 10th Anniversary and we are hoping to make the best of it by getting new members and organizing better events and of course, providing more services. In the coming months our biennial General Assembly Elections will take place right after our Annual Gala and we would like to encourage new faces to join us and be a part of our board of directors. The dates for all these events will be announced in the beginning of 2012 so stay tuned.

In this issue, we are hoping to reach out to more people and also inform you about the latest happenings at TACCI. Make sure to check our events calendar and do not forget to follow us on our social media channels which are home more than 1200 followers, combined, besides our 6500+ e-Newsletter readers.

TACCI and ISPAT Held a Workshop at the Annual NAATA Meeting in New York City

As a part of its mission to help facilitate better bilateral trade relations between Turkey and the US, TACCI held a special information session for the members of North American Automobile Trade Association (NAATA) at their annual meeting at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Manhattan in NYC. As the leading Turkish American Business and Trade organization, TACCI was reached by NAATA representatives and the TACCI President Celal Secilmis was invited to make a presentation. TACCI Office conducted a research with the latest figures and created a presentation on the Turkish Auto Import Industry, and with the exclusive participation of Mr. Hasan Pehlivan and Ms. Ayse Akcura of Investment Support and Promotion Agency of Turkey (ISPAT), the NAATA members had the chance to discover the latest facts about the Turkish Economy and the Auto Industry. As a result of the huge interest of the audience, the session was repeated right after the first one.

NAATA is a trade association of motor vehicle importers and exporters.  The members of the association import and export motor vehicles across international borders. Approximately 80 per cent of our members are based in North America. Since there has been an increase in motor vehicle imports from the United States by dealers in Turkey, NAATA members have shown much interest in the topics discussed and they had the chance to get their questions answered by TACCI and ISPAT representatives. The members of NAATA were interested in discussing North American vehicle exporters can find out more about the potential for doing business with Turkish vehicle dealers.  Specifically, delegates to the conference were interested in exploring how to find out about regulatory issues in Turkey, effective ways to develop business contacts and how to learn about the automotive market and potential for business in Turkey. There were a total of 80 delegates from over a dozen countries, mostly from North America. Some of delegates already traded with Turkey.  Many delegates traded with European Union countries and were very interested in TACCI's presentation for the reason that as a result of the EU accession of Turkey, the processes and regulations by which they have been exporting vehicles for years and with which they are familiar would then apply to Turkey.  In the interim, they were very interested in developing contacts within Turkey and would therefore benefit greatly by involvement in Chamber programs and activities.

TACCI will continue its efforts to help the increase the bilateral trade between Turkey and the US. For more info about NAATA and this event please contact the TACCI Office at info@turkishuschamber.org.

Analyst Regrets Turkey-Israel Rift

TACCI Board Member Mark Meirowitz for NJ Jewish News

The key to restoring peace between Israel and Turkey, says political analyst Mark Meirowitz, lies more in the past than the future.

held after his last English conversation class for Turkish
professors at Istanbul Technical University.

"Most Jews are not aware of the historical role of Turkey in rescuing Jews from the Inquisition and the Holocaust. I have made it my mission to bring these historical stories to the attention of Turks and Jews so that it helps build a foundation for excellent relations in the future," said Meirowitz.

Meirowitz - who lives in Manhattan but spends his summers in Elberon - spoke toNJJN about recent developments in Turkish-Israel relations and his mission to bridge the gap between Jews and Turks. An attorney who holds a doctorate in politics and teaches politics, history, and English at a number of colleges in New York, Meirowitz has written articles on Turkish foreign policy and has served as a panelist on U.S.-Turkey relations in conferences in Turkey and Washington, DC.

This summer he was granted a fellowship from State University of New York to teach English conversation to Turkish professors at Istanbul Technical University, where he lived in a campus guest house.

Meirowitz also lectures about his experiences in Turkey at synagogues in New York and New Jersey, including, most recently, at Congregation Brothers of Israel in Elberon, where he is a member, and at Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun in Manhattan, where he is men's club president.

Meirowitz told NJJN he sees more similarities than differences between Israelis and Turks, including similar foods, cultures, and national stories that have affected world history and events. There are about 20,000 Jews remaining in Turkey, mostly in Istanbul and Izmir. In the office building of the Jewish weekly newspaper,Salom, a bookstore markets siddurim and Torah texts translated from Hebrew to Turkish and even a Turkish-Hebrew dictionary, he said.

He has met with Jewish community leaders in Turkey during numerous visits there.

Among his most poignant experiences in Turkey was a chance encounter with 92-year-old Robert Lazare Rousso, one of many Turkish Jews reportedly rescued from the Gestapo in Paris by Turkish Ambassador Behiç Erkin. He visited Lazare Rousso with the grandson of the Turkish consul who rescued him. "I hugged and kissed Mr. Lazare Rousso when I heard his story. He was emaciated and close to death when he was rescued," Meirowitz said.

The story of the rescue of Jews by Turkish consuls is captured in the documentary film Desperate Hours. "My parents both survived internment at Auschwitz, so to hear a story like this hits me very hard. When my mother saw the film, she expressed regret for not being born a Turkish Jew, because otherwise she would have been rescued," said Meirowitz, whose mother was born in Vienna.

'Resolve this issue'

Israeli-Turkish relations imploded on Sept. 2 after the leak of the United Nations' Palmer Report on last year's Mavi Marmara flotilla debacle, in which Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish passengers. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expelled Israel's ambassador, Gabby Levy, and suspended military ties with Israel. Turkey had demanded that Israel apologize for the flotilla incident, pay compensation, and lift the embargo on Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to do so.

"Negotiations hit a brick wall," Meirowitz said. "What is needed now is for President Obama to put the two prime ministers together with him in a room and not let either of them leave until they resolve this issue. World peace and stability require that the two parties move on. There are too many challenges that need to be dealt with, including the nuclear threat from Iran. It is in no one's interest to have this crisis prolonged."

Personal interactions with Turks are critical now more than ever, said Meirowitz.

"To go all the way across the world to learn about a different society is an eye-opening experience, culturally, politically and personally. It made me very aware of a large part of the world we should be learning more about, and I found the Turks to be extremely warm and hospitable people. It is my hope in the Jewish New Year we will see peace and stability in the entire Middle East region."

Turkish - Native American Investment Bill One Vote From Passing House

Turkish-Native American Investment Bill One Vote From Passing House

On November 17 the House Committee on Natural Resources voted 27-15 to pass the Indian Tribal Trade and Investment Act, H.R. 2362, which will now be reported favorably to the House for a final vote.

G. Lincoln McCurdy, President of the Turkish Coalition of America, called the bipartisan vote a major step forward in enacting the first positive legislation toward Turkey in recent memory.

TACCI President Celal Secilmis provided written testimony for this bill and TACCI is one of the main supporters of HR. 2362.

Lincoln McCurdy talking to supporters after testifying at the Nov. 3 Subcommittee hearing on H.R. 2362
"For the last two years," said McCurdy, "Turkey and Native American Tribes have been developing a unique international relationship that promises to help create jobs and spur economic development in both Indian Country and Turkey. The Natural Resources Committee today voted to support sound policy and respect the economic interests of Native American Tribes. This is a historic step forward."

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs, championed the bill during the committee markup, telling Committee Members that as Native American Tribes are sovereign nations within a sovereign nation, they should be allowed to choose their business partners.

Bill supporters successfully argued that Turkey and Turkish companies were the only foreign entities to express interest in working with Native American Tribes, and that if the pilot program is successful, it could easily be expanded to include other countries.

"Even though this legislation has not yet been enacted," said McCurdy, "debate in Congress this month has helped to increase knowledge about a robust and modern Turkey and the challenging economic realities that Indian Country still must deal with. We hope that this legislation, if passed before the end of the year, will make a positive difference in 2012."

H.R. 2362, if passed by the full House, will establish a limited demonstration project that will authorize up to six Tribes or Tribal consortia to partner with Turkish companies to establish commercial ties without requiring federal government approval. Turkish companies' interest in working with Indian Country, coupled with their strengths in construction, uniquely positions them to help spur private-sector economic growth and create jobs. The activities authorized by the legislation would be funded by private-sector entities, without any expenditure of federal funds.
